As people - and one well-behaved dog - quietly emerged from their cars in the Moss Lake parking area, a loon began its call of welcome in the early morning mist. Making our way down the path to the shoreline, we softly chatted about a daughter’s unexpectedly early departure for college, and a baby boy’s second visit to Moss Lake in as many days. Murmurs of envy were heard, as we smelled the aroma of coffee that some thought to bring along. The pair of osprey nesting in the top of a dead tree out on the island began to announce to all of nature our arrival. The shoreline scene made us feel we had stepped into a precious moment in time prepared just for us by the God who created it all.
A small slice of sun reflected off the ridge behind the island, as the mist began to reluctantly move from the shoreline. Small bugs tagged as “Water Dancers” by George, glided on the glassy surface of the water leaving no wake. As we sang Morning Has Broken, a loon flew across the lake. The osprey continued their calling as we worshipped in the wonderfully otherwise silent sanctuary.
Celebration of the Creation story ~ from Light, Earth, Water, creatures of land and water, people, clouds and sky ~ was participated in by all those gathered in unique ways. Certainly, the 18 or so folks who worshipped early that morning were touched in different ways, taking away what was most meaningful for them.
Before we departed, we all enjoyed donuts, still warm from the shop, brought by the Barkers. A tasty ending to a wonderful start of the day!
The next time there is an opportunity for worship ‘outside the walls of the church’, do consider joining in. Let it be a gift to yourself ~ your presence will be a gift to all those others who have gathered to worship.
