APRIL 2009
Niccolls’ Youth Group, once again, headed south on a spring-break mission trip. Under the leadership of John and Therá Levi and Roger and Pam Parent, a group of 14 youth traveled to Rehoboth Beach, DE to work on several mission projects including Habitat for Humanity. Departing early morning on Sunday, April 5th, they travelled for 8 to 9 hours to the Sussex County Habitat for Humanity area which is their main site of work for the week. This mission trip is an opportunity for our youth to stretch their wings; test the mettle of their faith and to offer real ‘get your hands dirty’ service to others. Please keep the youth and their leaders in your prayers as they embark on their journey.

SUNDAY, APRIL 5
WE ARRIVED!!!
8 hours away and 30 degrees warmer lies a group of young individuals with an intention of changing the world community by community. These kids ranging from 12-18 are active participants of the Town of Webb and Inlet decided to travel to Rehoboth Beach to help out with Habitat for Humanity during spring break for a week.
On this first day we left at nearly 8:00 and arrived at 5-ish. Getting here was a relief, seeing as we went from 30 degrees to 70 degrees. The most agreed upon best part of the day was the beach and the fact that we all arrived unscathed of boredom and well anticipated for the days to come.

Coming from The snowy old forge weather down to the warm beach in Delaware it’s a good change. The trip has been real fun so far and I expect the fun to long but fun. I have been spending time with my friends and making new friends.

MONDAY, APRIL 6

TUESDAY, APRIL 7
Today we had to leave our home church here by 8:30am to be at the Sussex county Habitat Restore where they provided us with bountiful breakfast of doughnuts, monkey bread and fruit. After our delicious breakfast, and after being introduced to the habitat staff, we were separated into groups and started working. Half of us went outside where they worked on making a game of jenga, with some habitat facts written on them, they also picked up trash. The group inside helped move windows from one side of the stores to the other, and we also priced things. Then Kaylin and I got to go into a room where two women were building a rack for more doors to go on. It was really cool to see women taking things into their own hands. Soon after we all ate lunch.

Orientation
JENGA:

The second half of the day started with a visit to the local park, where we played Frisbee and football. It was great to see everyone getting along, having a good time and working together to get the football out of the river several times. Later on, we went back to the church and had dinner. It was the best macaroni and cheese I’ve ever had. We finished off the night with ice cream from Dairy Queen and a compelling movie about a brave football player.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8
Today we started out bright and early at seven AM after a quick breakfast we drove for a half an hour to the worksite. When we arrived, we were given jobs and went right to work. Several of us wheeled dirt and filled in along the shoulder of the road. Another group pulled trash and debris out of the woods at the next building site. The last group raked out a recently completed sewer system that was being planted with grass. The day was mostly sunny but filled with cool breeze! There was some brush hog work along with a little tree cutting.
Later we went back to church for showers and planning a dinner menu. We then went to the park to unwind. Jordan, Alex and John then made a pancake supper with sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs and strawberry sauce.
After dinner we had time for reflection after which we all enjoyed some ice cream cake. The day was enjoyed by everyone and a good night awaited us after watching a funny movie.

THURSDAY, APRIL 9
When we arrived at work this morning, we were divided into groups again. One group went into one of the houses to “mud”. This specific house was called a “Women’s Build”. Our AmeriCorps volunteer, Chiara, mentioned that a group of women come every Saturday to work on the house. However, seeing how it was only Thursday, the women were not there so Rodge, Matt, Tory, Chiara and I worked on the house ourselves. We sanded the walls and mudded or plastered the corners of the rooms where the wall meets the ceiling. Kaylin, Margot, Pam and Adam, another AmeriCorps volunteer, worked on the vinyl siding for the shed. Pam was extremely proud that she learned to work the band saw (sorry if that’s not the right word). The rest of our group was finishing up the landscaping.
Later that evening we all met up for a bonfire with a small portion of the local youth group. After much discussion and adventure we all decided that our next mission is to bring the Grace United Methodist Church youth, they call themselves S.W.O.O.S.H, to our very own Old Forge.
